The History of GMC

GMC is a division of General Motors and was originally known as the General Motors Truck Company. Today, the brand makes powerful pickups and SUVs that cater to commercial industries and adventurous private buyers. It has been successful at appealing to those buyers from the very beginning.

Early GMC Ancestors

Since 1912, GMC has been a name that means power to automobile buyers. The design of the trucks may have been much different back then, but they were still designed with the same purpose in mind: to help people get tough jobs done. They were an active part of military vehicle production during the First World War and focused greater than 90% of their truck production for the military in 1918.

For over 30 years, models like the Yukon have been built with GMC's unique combination of power and refinement. Yukon SUVs can be barebones and for most heavy lifting, or they can be outfitted luxuriously. Trucks like the Sierra 1500 first went on sale in 1999, capturing GMC's ambition and desire to live up to their history.

GMC dates its true history as beginning in 1902 and even published a book detailing that history in 2002. It was called "GMC: The First 100 Years." That is a book that covers one of the most important brands in automotive history and one of the few that focuses solely on pickup trucks and SUVs. They've always been a part of America's commercial industries and a very important one. GMC's current lineup lives up to the brand's history and keeps it going strong into the second 100 years of GMC's existence. Models like the Acadia, Terrain, and Sierra 2500 & 3500 keep GMC at the top of the sales charts in the modern day.
