GMC Introduces Revolutionary CrabWalk Technology for Enhanced Maneuverability in Electric Trucks

GMC has established itself as a leader in the automotive world by embracing advanced technology in its vehicles. Now, automakers are unveiling an innovative feature for several EVs called “CrabWalk.” Offered on the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 and both the Hummer EV pickup and SUV, this feature lets drivers maneuver their trucks sideways to bypass obstacles and difficult spots on roads or trails. With this innovation, GMC redefines the way drivers overcome obstacles and navigate challenging terrain.

What is CrabWalk?

CrabWalk is a cutting-edge feature provided by GMC for the Hummer EV and the Sierra EV. In both models, the mechanism operates in a similar manner. CrabWalk enables the rear wheels to pivot along with the front wheels. Both pairs of wheels pivot at the same angle—up to 10 degrees to the right or left. This functionality is available at low speeds of up to 20 MPH, making it ideal for sidestepping tricky trail conditions, avoiding on-road obstructions, and even simplifying parking.

How Does CrabWalk Work?

Basically, drivers need to bring their vehicle to a near stop or slow it to just above one MPH with the steering wheel centered. Then, they can press the “4-Wheel Steer” button on the Hummer EV for four seconds to activate CrabWalk. For those driving the Sierra EV, simply navigate to the infotainment screen, choose the “Controls” app, tap “Rear Steering,” and select the CrabWalk feature. Once activated in either vehicle, the car will begin moving diagonally.

Drivers should be aware that certain features are disabled while CrabWalk is active. For instance, the vehicle must be stationary or moving slowly to initiate CrabWalk, the steering wheel must be held completely steady, and Super Cruise technology must not be engaged. Additionally, advanced safety systems like lane-keep assist are turned off during CrabWalk, which is another reason it is limited to lower speeds. Once in use, CrabWalk works at speeds up to 20 MPH; exceeding this limit causes the wheels to stop turning in unison.

After maneuvering to the desired spot, drivers can deactivate CrabWalk in the same manner it was activated.
