Subtle noises are a part of driving a car. However, unusual sounds, like clicking or ticking, emanating from your vehicle may be a cause for concern. Identifying the issue early assists in avoiding costly repairs and replacements. Here are the common odd car noises and what they could indicate.

Squeaky Brakes

Squeaky brakes indicate that your brake pads have outlived their lives. Most pads are manufactured with metal tabs that rub on the rotor when the pads wear out. A squealing noise shows you need a brake examination from our reputable mechanics. Ignoring this maintenance procedure will culminate unpleasant sounds when the brake pads wear up to the metal backing plates or rivets.

Engine Rattling

Engine pinging, hammering, or rattling are associated with three related but different combustion issues: pre-ignition, detonation, and spark knocks. They usually occur when the engine is below a load or while accelerating. Engine rattling sounds indicate abnormal ignition. Rather than a uniform burning of the fuel-air mixture within the engine's combustion unit, there are countless flame fronts with a rattling noise. These pressure waves collide to create the rattling or clattering sound.

Engine Clicking

Engine clicking may indicate loose hardware such as lifters or the need for oil lubrication. Examine your oil levels using a dipstick, and if that's not an issue, it could be problems in the valve train hardware. It could also indicate a blockage, thanks to the crud within the system.

Knocking Under the Hood

Knocking noises from the under the hood may indicate the need for a reliable mechanic. The most common causes of knocking sounds result from issues with the pistons, valves, connecting rods, and other main parts. Other problems may include an improper function of the pulley and belt.

Engine Squealing

Despite the innumerable culprits of engine squeals, the most common cause is a broken or worn-out serpentine belt. This belt is responsible for driving most accessories in the engine, such as the alternator or steering pump. Bad pulleys can also emanate squeaking sounds in the engine.
