If you’ve been in the market for a brand-new family SUV in Lincoln, you’ll be happy to learn that the latest edition of the popular GMC Acadia now comes with an industry-first piece of safety tech: a Rear Seat Reminder.

Helping parents always remember to check their back seats before leaving their vehicles, this new piece of safety tech should be a welcome addition for many parents around Nebraska.

“Acadia drivers live busy lives with demanding schedules, and the Rear Seat Reminder helps protect the things we care about most,” said Tricia Morrow, GM global safety strategy engineer. “Whether it’s your lunch, laptop, pet or most importantly, your child, it’s easier than it seems to forget what’s in the back seat when moving between life’s events. With this new feature, we are leading the charge to address this ongoing problem.”

According to the latest statistics, about half of all children who die of heatstroke were accidentally forgotten in their cars’ back seats. On top of that, one of the leading causes of vehicle larceny was due to expensive objects, such as laptops and phones, being left in the back.

GMC is looking to counteract this trend by having their new Rear Seat Reminder system monitor the Acadia’s rear doors. If the system detects the rear doors being opened and closed, then the next time the car is turned off, the system will send out five audible chiming sounds to the driver, as well as a message that says “Rear Seat Reminder/Look in Rear Seat” in the driver information center.

“Technology alone cannot solve the issue of heatstroke when it comes to young children, but this new Acadia reminder can help. We must always remember that the safest way to protect a child from heatstroke is to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle,” said Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide.
