The GMC Sierra HD takes its reputation of rugged strength and durability to new heights this model year. With a recalibrated Duramax 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel engine, the Sierra kicks up its output with a 19 percent increase in max torque.
The revised Duramax engine is essentially new, sharing only the bore and stroke dimensions of the 2016 version. This allows the truck to continue offering 90 percent of its peak torque at 1,500 rpm, which many Sierra HD shoppers are sure to appreciate.
The powertrain is now equipped with a stronger cylinder block, better oil- and coolant-flow capacity, an electronically-controlled turbocharging system and a new vehicle air intake system. These changes maximize power and make for quieter performance while keeping exhaust emissions low.
“Nearly everything about the Duramax is new, designed to produce more torque at lower rpm and more confidence when trailering or hauling,” said Gary Arvan, chief engineer. “You’ll also notice the refinement improvements the moment you start the engine, and appreciate them as you cruise quietly down the highway — with or without a trailer.”
Most notably, the Sierra HD sees a huge boost in performance, and the powerplant is now rated at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The torque increase leads to a higher max tow capacity of 20,000 lbs., and gives drivers more confidence out on the road.
The GMC Sierra HD will be available at our Chevy dealership in Lincoln early next year. For more information on forthcoming models, be sure to keep up with our blog!
