Nationwide, there were over 228,500 charging stations in operation at the end of September 2025. There are nearly 77,000 places to charge an electric vehicle across the country, although most charging stations are located in coastal areas and larger metropolitan areas.
What Types of EV Charging Stations Are Available?
The country's EV charging network comprises DC fast-charging sites and Level 2 charging ports. The majority of U.S. charging locations are Level 2 (around 165,000), while roughly 61,700 are DC fast-charging stations. Drivers can access nearly 64,000 Level 2 stations across the US, with approximately 13,500 DC charging ports available. Between the two options, fast chargers are best for commuters and long-distance travelers — many electric vehicles can be nearly fully charged in under an hour using DC fast charging. Level 2 charging is slower, taking roughly 5-6 hours to charge an EV fully, and is well-suited for topping off during short trips, charging while parked at work, or overnight charging.
EV Charging By Brand
Nationwide, Tesla operates more fast-charging stations than any other provider. Tesla has a total of 33,400 charging ports across the country. Electrify America follows with about 5,100 charging ports, making it the second-largest installer. EVgo and ChargePoint tie for the third-largest count of fast-charging ports in the U.S., with Blink close behind. Although Tesla leads in the number of available charging ports, ChargePoint has the most charging station locations overall, with a total of 3,870 sites, while Tesla has 2,783 stations.
EV Charging Compatibility
EVs rely on two main connector types: NACS and CCS. Most U.S. charging stations utilize the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector, which serves as a widely accepted standard. Tesla uses its own NACS connector, and other networks are also beginning to adopt NACS. If you're unsure which chargers you'll encounter, keeping an adapter in the vehicle is a smart move to ensure access to different charging stations.
