The second generation of the popular GMC Terrain was finally revealed at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, astonishing crowds with its myriad of updates. For 2018, the SUV gains not one, but three new turbocharged powertrains, plus an array of advanced safety features and tech. Continue on for the full list of changes to look for on the upcoming 2018 GMC Terrain, heading to our Lincoln dealership this summer.
Turn Up the Power With a Turbo Engine
The 2018 Terrain swaps out last year’s V6 and four-cylinder configurations for a trio of turbocharged powerplants. The two gas-powered turbos—a 170-horsepower 1.5-liter and a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter—will continue the SUV’s legacy of being a smooth and energetic performer. Plus, the 2.0L offers a maximum tow capacity of up to 3,500 lbs. Both configurations will receive a brand-new nine-speed automatic gearbox, which is controlled via an Electronic Precision Shift gear selector system.
Sitting at the top of the line is a 137-horsepower 1.6-liter turbodiesel, which comes paired to a six-speed automatic. According to GMC, this exciting new engine is slated to offer maximum efficiency and capability.
Added Suite of Advanced Safety Tech
The new Terrain’s available driver-assist features are designed to serve as the eyes in the back (and sides) of your head, detecting potential hazards before you can even see them. Standard, all models receive Teen Driver Mode and a Rear Seat Reminder, improving safety for everyone in the family.
On top of that, buyers can opt for a Surround Vision camera system, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator, Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking and more.

Sleek New Styling Inside and Out
For its newest generation, the Terrain adopts a softer look that blends its old-school masculine attitude with modern aesthetics. Flaunting rounder, more sculpted corners along with new bumpers, redesigned headlights with LED daylights, windswept body lines and more, the SUV signifies GMC’s design evolution.
“It is a striking design with functional beauty,” said Helen Emsley, executive director, Global GMC Design. “There’s confidence and optimism in its stance, with exceptional attention to detail that speaks to GMC’s rise as a premium brand.”
On the inside, the Terrain is treated to even more refinements from a soft-to-the-touch instrument panel and aluminum trim to a larger center console and more cargo storage options. Additionally, all models are equipped with a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a WiFi hotspot to keep passengers connected on the go.
The crown jewel of trims, Denali, returns this year, adding a luxury option back to the lineup. The top-tier trim is distinguished on the outside by unique chrome appointments to the grille, side mirror caps, door handles and body-side molding. Terrain Denali models also get standard LED headlamps, 19-inch machined aluminum wheels, navigation, a 7-speaker sound system and a hands-free programmable power liftgate.
